REVIEW: 2017 Dodge Challenger AWD

Drivers in Newton are practical, but the all-new Challenger might have some wondering whether a muscle car is their next vehicle of choice. Safety

The 2017 Challenger may change how you look at performance coupes, as it was built as much for families as it was style and performance. As evidence, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded it with a best-possible 5-Star Overall Rating.

The Challenger is equipped with airbags throughout the cabin, a solid high-strength steel frame, crumple zones to absorb impact, and active head restraints. Available automatic high beams, rain—sensing wipers, hill start assist, all-speed traction control, and electronic stability control round out the Challenger’s safety features. The advanced all-wheel drive system gives you ultimate control in any driving condition, and can transition between AWD and rear-wheel without your input. Available driver assistance technologies include blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and backup camera.

Features

The 2017 Challenger has 14 different trim levels.  Feel free to swing by and see your friends at McGovern Dodge to discover which one is best for you.  The base model is equipped with Uconnect infotainment system, 5-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth technology, USB and auxiliary input, 6-speaker audio system, 6-way power driver’s seat, leather accents, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote start.

You also have the option to add any of 13 packages of features, including Cold Weather, Technology, Sound, Super Sport, Super Track, and Classic. These include features from heated front seats and steering wheel to sporty styling accents.

Styling

The styling on the 2017 model is a throwback to the 70s, when American muscle cars were at their height. It has a long hood and a short deck, nostalgic details, and the option for badging and racing stripes. Inside, the design is more modern and functional, with a clean center stack and retro gauges that is both functional and cool. While performance coupes aren’t often known for their cargo space, the Challenger has an impressive trunk to suit your practical needs.

Engine

The Challenger AWD comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates a robust 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. If you desire even more muscle, consider the available 5.7-liter Hemi V8, 6.4-liter Hemi V8, or the top of the food chain 707 horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or Dodge’s Torqueflite 8-speed automatic.
