Most mid-size SUVs exude the off-road image in their styling, yet they’re not much different than your average sedan when you look under the hood. This is why Massachusetts drivers looking for a utility vehicle that’s compact yet powerful tend to choose the Durango.
This year’s model has updated styling and new features for safety and convenience, but they’re just a small part of what’s to love about the 2017 Dodge Durango. Read on for our full review:
Engine and Towing
The base engine on the all-new Durango is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 8-speed automatic transmission, 293 horsepower, and 260 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain gets up to 26 MPG, but also performs with a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds, for rear- or all-wheel drive.
If you choose the R/T or Citadel models, you can enjoy a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with Fuel Saver Technology. This option also has an 8-speed automatic transmission, but is more powerful with 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. If you’ve got a trailer, this is a great option because the rear-wheel drive can tow up to 7,4000 pounds, while all-wheel drive can tow 7,200 pounds.
In addition to excellent towing capacity for a car its size, the Durango now features a camera that lets you view your trailered items on the 8.4-inch display for added safety and convenience.
Styling
LED lighting serves both form and function, as it’s brighter and more efficient, plus adds a modern feel to styling. The 2017 Durango has LED headlights beneath projector-beam lamps for the ultimate in visibility, and LED lights across the entire back end to finish off its “racetrack taillight” display. Most trim levels have a monochromatic body, but fans of chrome can opt for the SXT or Citadel trims for some extra shine. Want to go a step further? The Blacktop package on the GT and R/T models includes gloss-black 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels, crosshair grille, and black headlight bezels, emblazoned with Durango badges.
Features
The 2017 Durango comes standard with Uconnect infotainment system, WMA/MP3 support, Bluetooth connectivity, Sirius satellite radio, and auxiliary input jack. It’s also equipped with fog lights, heated power-side mirrors, 3-zone automatic climate control, and tilting and telescopic steering wheel.
Optional features include a third-row bench and second-row captain’s chairs, upgraded Uconnect system with navigation, LCD multi-function display, power sunroof, power hatch, auto-dimming high beams, and a class IV hitch receiver with load-leveling shocks.
Safety
The 2017 Durango earned good scores in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and features a number of standard and optional safety features. Driver assistance technologies include a blind-spot monitor, parking sensors, rearview camera, and more.
